Kelly eyes Windies pick
“I was hoping to get picked on the West Indies senior team but I’m not sure what is that outcome,” Kelly said after Trinidad and Tobago wrapped up their 125-run win over Barbados in the Carib Beer Challenge final Wednesday.
“I’m going to England pretty soon on a contract to play up there or I am hoping to play in the A-team if I get selected later on in the year.”
Kelly finished the competition with 314 runs while grabbing 16 wickets with his busy medium pace.
The 22-year-old played a critical role in TT’s capture of the final, striking a fine 93 in the second innings as the hosts set Barbados an imposing 337 to win.
He then returned to grab two wickets, prising out openers Wayne Blackman and Dale Richards after they had posted 86 for the first wicket. Captain Daren Ganga was full of praise for Kelly, along with all-rounder Rayad Emrit who scored a century in the first innings.
“I think our all-rounders pulled us through in this game. If you look at the performances of Richard Kelly and Rayad Emrit you would see they definitely helped us out when we were in dire straits,” Kelly said.
“It only augurs well for their careers, their individual careers, they have been playing cricket for Trinidad and Tobago for quite some time and I think they are going to go from strength to strength.”
He added: “It shows the depth in our batting, it shows the depth in our ability as players and it is just a wonderful feeling to be leading a team with such calibre as this one.”
