Lloyd: No choice for captaincy

Lloyd, who chaired the first meeting of his committee here, said the Board will not make the choice because the issue “pre-dated” their appointment.

“We didn’t have to make any recommendation as such. That pre-dated us so that will be done by the Board. We discussed all aspects of it, but there again that was before we came into being,” Lloyd said after the meeting.

Chanderpaul resigned recently citing a need to concentrate on his batting. The selection committee met at the weekend and made a recommendation but an announcement of the choice is yet to be made.

Commenting on speculation that batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan might get the nod, Lloyd said he could be one of about four choices.

“There are a number of them. We have Sarwan. We have (Daren) Ganga. We have the young fellow (Sylvester) Joseph (from Antigua) who has done extremely well with the ‘A’ side,” Lloyd surmised.

“I think Chris Gayle was brought into the picture. So they have a few names and it is entirely up to them (the Board) to make that decision.

“It is not that they are short of names as such but (they need a player) who will be consistent in their play because you want a captain who will be a regular member of side and somebody who will galvanise the team and we need to get some success,” Lloyd said.

On Sarwan, Lloyd said: “Well, he’s been vice-captain before. I think he has got the qualities and it is entirely up to the powers that be at the moment.

It is not in our current remit at the moment. It will be in the future.”

Commenting on suggestions that it should it be former captain Brian Lara, Lloyd said:

“Brian has been around. He’s a keen student of the game. Then again it is entirely up to them (the Board) to name a captain .”

He said while his committee — comprising former players Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Desmond Haynes, Deryck Murray and Ian Bishop — did not make a recommendation they discussed the issue.

Bishop and Murray did not attend the meeting but coach Bennett King and WICB’s chief cricket operations manager Zorol Barthley were in attendance.

“They (the committee) have their different scenarios because people were thinking short-term (and some) people were thinking of a long-term,” Lloyd said.

“I think basically we should be thinking of somebody for a long-term situation but then we have different (views) and I think they (the Board) will come up with, hopefully, the right decision.”
