Ambassador praises Chinese role in TT

“I know the Government also makes a great effort to fight the crime. My personal opinion, the people working with the Government, you can get improvement,” he told reporters during an exhibition of Chinese memorabilia and artefacts at Soong’s Great Wall restaurant, Circular Road, San Fernando on Saturday evening.

Asked whether the Chinese government would help Trinidad and Tobago in its fight against crime, Xing said, “If the Trinidad Government needs the help from China, I can convey these requests to my government, our government would consider helping.”

Xing described the Chinese contribution to TT’s national development as “outstanding” and predicted closer economic, cultural and personal exchanges as Sino-TT relations continued to expand and develop. Meanwhile, chairman of the Bicentennial Celebrations Committee, Dr David Picou, said the 200th anniversary celebrations would feature lectures, documentaries and films on the achievements of Chinese immigrants.

Dr Picou recalled that the first group of 192 Chinese immigrants landed at Toco and eventually settled in Cocorite.

He said the Chinese community has produced outstanding persons in the fields of business, culture, drama and politics.

A gala folk, trade and culinary fair is also planned for the bicentennial celebrations.
