Govt welcomes public help in crime fight
This was indicated yesterday by PNM vice-chairman John Donaldson at a press conference after the party’s General Council meeting at Balisier House, Port-of-Spain.
Asked if the PNM saw the referendum as indication of an emerging political force, Donaldson replied, “We are a democracy and if persons want to get the support of the people through any kind of action, they are free to do so.”
But he added, “We are the Government. And I’m sure the Prime Minister would be appreciate help from any groups of citizens which want to help him find a solution to the escalating crime problem in the country, which is also being experienced in the Caribbean, Latin America and, indeed, the Western Hemisphere. As the PM stated, he will spare no effort in dealing with crime in TT.”
Donaldson also disclosed that three committees would be meeting soon with constituents to discuss matters of concern to the party and the country. But he dismissed any questions that the PNM was being put on an election footing.
“Parties are always on an election footing. This meeting would be an ordinary party activity,” he said.
Overand Padmore, advisor to the Prime Minister, who was also present at the press conference, added that the meeting with constituents related to the party’s celebration of its upcoming 50th anniversary.
Among the events planned for the celebration is a youth league programme.
Donaldson described yesterday’s General Council meeting as “very interesting” because there was participation by many members, including representatives from the party’s Tobago Council despite the jazz festival in Plymouth.
