Marcia Charles performs for the world

Not only are they determined to defeat all comers at the competition but they are equally committed to conquering the hearts and souls of their audiences with dazzling artistic performances.

The venue for the World Championships for the Performing Arts is the Hilton Hotel in Burbank, California with the contest occurring during the month of August.

The artistic director of the Marcia Charles Dance Theatre Company, Marcia Charles, said 15 of her students will be participating in the World Championships for the Performing Arts.

“The competition entails dancing, drama and modelling,” she said.

Charles continued, “Our participation in the competition came about when Carivog Trinidad and Tobago International held the preliminary part of the competition in late October 2005 at the Cascadia Hotel, St Ann’s, to select the Trinidad and Tobago artistes for the World Championships. Then, for the semi-finals, the American judges came down here and selected all of the people who would take part in the World Championships for the Performing Arts. We were the only dance theatre company selected to go.”

She said soloists from other dance companies were also selected to compete in the international competition.

Other artistes, she revealed, from other art forms were chosen to go to California as well.

Some of the members from the Marcia Charles Dance Theatre Company who would be attending are Abiodun Dosu, 14, Josanne McIntosh, 21, Kherdejsia Thomas, ten, Nathalia Rupert, 14, Chelsea Marie Spence, 12, Amira King, 18, Candice Scanterbury, 18 and Christal Nedd, 26.

Dosu received a dance and modelling scholarship from the American judges to compete in the World Championships for the Performing Arts.

“It has been a dream of mine for a very long time and I’m glad I got the opportunity to experience it,” said Dosu.

She’s been dancing for five years with the Marcia Charles Dance Theatre Company and she specialises in folk, contemporary and ballet.

She eventually wants to be a professional dancer and model because it’s a dream that she yearns to accomplish.
