Religion and the State

He recently made the comment in a reference to himself “righteous leader, prosperous nation.” This is of course a Christian comment. There is no secret that he is partial to the Pentecost and heavily influenced by this branch of Christian thinking. Isn’t there or was there in fact a ministry in charge of religious affairs in which Donna Carter was in charge? Whatever happened to her and the Ministry of Ecclesiastical Affairs? What was the purpose of that ministry?

The esteemed self-appointed righteous leader makes public trips to Churches of the Pentecost and receives the blessings of his God. All this is good. Now there is this hasty welcome of the new Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Miller Simpson. One wonders why she was announced in such an abrupt manner and in such a short space of time after her pronouncement as leader of that nation?

What I do know is that she shares the spiritual biases of Patrick Manning and perhaps is more zealous in applying them to the government. She has insisted and is heaven bent on placing pastors on all boards to assure proper action. (How can that guarantee integrity is beyond me, history speaks for itself!) She is from, of course, a country which predominantly shares her Christian views. Trinidad and Tobago is not a country like that.
