Beckles: $626M for street lights
he yesterday read a statement to the Senate on the 2005-2007 National Street Lighting Programme for the country’s highways, roads, schools and communities.
At present, she said, the country has 64,000 street lights, but from 2005 to 2007 some 82,000 more lights are to be erected. Of these lights, 47,500 will be installed in South Trinidad, 12,920 in Tobago, 9,020 in North Trinidad, 7,960 in Central Trinidad, and 4,600 in the East-West Corridor. In addition, the project includes the upgrade of 36,000 existing street-lights from 70 watts to 150 watts, the illuminating of 80 kilometres of roads, and the lighting of crime-prone areas.
Beckles noted that for supplying street-lighting $7,688,988, comprised of $4,434,271 was owed to TTEC by Government-related agencies and $3,254,771 by private developers.
