Kudos for Kamla

It was the media, which first saw Kamla Persad-Bissessar as the successor to Basdeo Panday when the issue of succession in the UNC first came up some years ago following her appointment as acting Prime Minister.

While we are saddened over Panday’s conviction and sentence, constituents of Siparia are proud that their MP is the chosen one from among a few good men.

Siparia can now boast about having given the country another Opposition Leader. Kamla has followed in the footsteps of veteran politicians like Lionel Frank Seukeran, Vernon Jamadar and Raffique Shah — all of whom were former Opposition Leaders and MPs for Siparia in the past.

As the UNC wrestles with the leadership issue, it is left to be seen whether Kamla will politically string the men opposing her around her neck and emerge as the proverbial Mother Kali of local politics.
