‘Falco’ grabs Chutney Monarch crown

President of the National Chutney Foundation Dr Vijay Ramlal confirmed Ramgobin’s absence and said he was told by Ramgobin that he (Ramgobin) did not have a Soca Warriors themed song which was mandatory for the first segment of the finals.

The competition consisted of two rounds, with the first being chutney soca/calypso and second being traditional chutney. Placing second was the “Hitman” Neeshan Prabhoo.

Reigning Pichakaree champion Jagdeo Phagoo was a crowd pleaser with his performance of “Go Warriors Go.”

Former champ Heeralal Rampartap thrilled the crowd when he delivered a highly energetic presentation, but only placed sixth.

Nothing on the night could have topped Falco’s spectacular rendition of “Goal in yuh Popoloi,” which depicted the Soca Warriors team on the road to World Cup 2006 in Germany. Falco’s traditional number was titled “Dharm Ki Sacha.”

Speaking with Newsday after the announcement of his victory, a beaming Maharaj expressed disappointment that he did not have the opportunity to compete against the reigning champion.

“Last year I wrote Ramgobin’s winning song titled ‘Try Unity.’ I would have liked the challenge of competing against the reigning king on stage and it was sad that he did not show up,” Maharaj said.

Guest performers included Kes The Band, Maximus Dan, Shurwayne Winchester, De Fosto, Vikash Dancers, DJ Dynasty Crew, Bollywood Dancers, SSL Melobugz and Malick All Stars Tassa Group.
