Cop assaulted
The incident occurred at about 3 pm when the sergeant, who was in uniform, saw a man standing nearby smoking a cigarette. He allegedly asked the man to stop smoking, but the man ignored him. The sergeant walked up to the man and again asked him to stop smoking.
According to eyewitness accounts, the man cuffed the sergeant in the stomach then pointed a service pistol at him. A scuffle ensued. Eventually the man identified himself as a police officer.
The sergeant made a note in the police diary at Besson Street Police Station, then reported the matter to Snr Supt Errol Denoon, Head of the Port-of-Spain Division. ASP Hansraj has been assigned to investigate the incident.
The sergeant sought medical attention and has given a statement to the investigator.
A report on the matter is expected to be sent to Police Commissioner Trevor Paul.
