Red Cross honours volunteers

The Trinidad and Tobago (TT) Red Cross Society honoured 148 volunteers, including long standing members, at its Port-of-Spain headquarters.

During the past year, volunteers helped the society to implement first aid activities, improve its disaster preparedness planning and intensified work in the prevention of HIV/AIDS.

Rajendra Arjoon, chairman of the northern branch, said the ceremony was to celebrate the formation of the Red Cross Society in TT and to award volunteers, both young and old, who contributed their time and effort. He said, unlike some organisations that “tend to forget their older members,” the TT Red Cross chose to honour long standing volunteers in a formal ceremony.

Barbara Newton-Davis, commandant and Red Cross volunteer for 57 years, told Newsday, that she worked her way up to her present rank and has been involved in many Red Cross competitions.
