Venezuelan wins Savannah race
The closing event generated as much excitement as the first race almost two weeks ago when Argentine Sebastien Donadio outsprinted a large field to win in a record time.
But on Saturday the Venezuelan came prepared for his counterparts having ridden throughout the series. And in the end he got his award pipping Donadio at the finish line.
Donadio settled for the runners-up spot featuring again on the rostrum on what was an outstanding series for him.
Guyana’s Marlon Wiliams who won the circuit race around Market Square in the sister isle of Tobago last Wednesday again put on a good performance that earned him the third place finish on Saturday.
Riding for the West Indies team Williams started the series slowly before he sprang to life in the stages contested at the Arima Velodrome and in the sister isle. The evergreen David Alves secured fourth place in the race riding for Trinidad and Tobago and the West Indies team, while Canada’s Glen Rendall proved good enough for fifth. Italy’s Roberto Chiappa and England’s Johnathan Norfolk who were the most exciting cyclists in the Beacon Series, finished disappointingly 12th and 13th respectively in the race.
Another Trinidad and Tobago rider — Jude Bentley — riding also for Rafmon Mecalfab, secured sixth position.
Germany’s Marc Jager finished next in seventh while Jamaica’s O’Neil Samuel, United States’ Daniel Hollaway and Shannon Metivier were eighth, ninth and tenth respectively.
