UNC membership must not be impotent

This statement might well come to haunt his current ‘‘cabal’’ in the upper hierarchy of the UNC. (When tempers boil good sense evaporates). Old Russian adage.

The fracturing of the UNC really began in June 2003 when Mr Panday spat on the results of the party’s democratic elections which he himself had commissioned.

Sudama, Maharaj and Maraj were alienated resulting in the formation of ‘‘Team Unity’’ and premature general elections.

Ramesh and company were the proximate cause but Panday was author of his own demise.

D?j? vu in ‘06. Panday again dissed the results of party elections and two factions have emerged. In one corner Dookeran, Ganga Singh, Yetming, Lucky...in the other, Kamla, Ramesh, Warner... A standoff between those with cojones to tell the leader to his face in broad daylight ‘‘I don’t agree with you,’’ and those whose modus operandi is ‘‘yes Bas’’ and quickie back room deals.

PNM was Williams and Williams was the PNM. Important contributions aside, the Doc left behind a party totally innocent of brain and backbone.

Will the old Bas’ legacy be the alienation of people like Dookeran, Sudama, Yetming, Fuad Khan, Sadiq Baksh, Jillian Lucky, Ganga Singh as Williams got rid of Solomon, James, Winston Mahabir, Robinson? The general membership of the UNC must not be as impotent as the PNM crowd was and still is.
