Latas mobbed by adoring fans
The Soca Warriors along with a contingent of officials including FIFA Vice President, Austin Jack Warner toured several areas in South Trinidad, including Rio Claro, Princes Town, Penal, Debe and San Fernando.
The PTSC tour bus carrying the footballers arrived in San Fernando about 4.15 pm. As the footballers alighted the vehicle, loud chants and screams were heard from school children and teenagers, who had gathered since 1pm awaiting their arrival.
As Latapy exited the bus screams of “Latapy, Latapy, Latapy” filled the atmosphere. While walking towards the stage, although surrounded by bodyguards, school girls managed to shove their way over the police barricades grabbing him by the shoulders.
Latapy stumbled and had to be assisted by security personnel in regaining his balance.
The officers then carried a dazed looking Latapy to the stage where he was greeted by members of the City Corporation, led by Deputy Mayor, Malika Blair.
After settling down on the stage Latapy regained his composure and was seen talking and laughing with his fellow team mates. Latapy played his final farewell match on home soil last Wednesday when the Warriors drew 1-1 against Peru.
Deputy Mayor Blair in a brief speech welcomed the Warriors to the Southern City and wished them success in the upcoming World Cup 2006 in Germany. “You all are ambassadors and may all your hopes and aspirations for the World Cup become a reality.
You all have our blessings, love, support and prayers” Blair announced.
Blair wished Latapy a happy retirement. Thousands of people lined the streets of San Fernando to bid farewell and good luck to the Warriors on their journey to Germany.
