Star Search is on today

Kendall Jack, 16, one of the performers of Surpass said “this gives us a chance to carry our music further.” Jack along with the other members of the group, Ricky Jules, 16 and Kevin Armstrong, 18, did a R&B/Hip Hop Combination called “Set It Off Tonight.”

Linton Gaston, 26, and Nixon Prescod, 28, of Prophecii did a reggae/hip hop combination called “Speak the Truth.”

“We see Star Search as an opportunity to carry our music and our message around the world. It is an opportunity to reach out to the world through words, power and song and try to take the music to a higher level,” Gaston said.

Coordinator of Star Search, Mark Superville, said that the search will help open people’s minds and give them vision.

“Take these guys for example” said Superville, referring to the members of Surpass and Prophecii, “they want to sing R&B and Hip Hop with a local flavour and they are being given the opportunity to do that.”

He stressed that Star Search is trying to create an avenue for them to express themselves and give them exposure while at the same time indirectly promote Trinidad, Carnival and tourism.

Superville said that there will be more than one winner and they will be placed on the website Vibe.com along with their music. “Vibe.com is a website viewed by people who can help the artistes,” he said.

Star Search was created out of the working relationship that Universal Concepts has with Vibe Magazine NY and Vibe.com. Music artistes in TT can win a collaboration and music video for BET, MTV and Tempo with popular rapper Mike Jones of the Warner Brother’s Record Label and Ice Age Entertainment.

The second Star Search screening is scheduled to take place today at Long Circular Mall Atrium from 10 am to 6 pm, and the third screening on May 20 at Gulf City Mall Atrium from 10 am to 6 pm.
