Dookeran, Kamla for Sando meeting
On the heels of conciliatory talks, Dookeran will join Persad-Bissessar at a UNC political meeting tomorrow.
The meeting will be the first public appearance on a UNC platform for the embattled Dookeran, since his face-off with the UNC executive at a Rienzi Complex meeting where he was not allowed to address supporters the day former chairman Basdeo Panday was jailed.
Dookeran’s invitation to the meeting, organised by the party’s San Fernando West/East constituency groups, follows a series of discussions he held with Persad-Bissessar last week.
The meeting takes place at the Canaan Presbyterian Primary School at Duncan Village at 7.30 pm.
The school is located a short distance from the Bryans Gate, Phillipine home of Panday, who stepped down as chairman after he was convicted for failing to disclose a London bank account held in his wife’s name while he was prime minister.
The President revoked his position as Opposition Leader a day after he was sentenced to two years in jail and fined.
Panday, who is out on $300,000 bail pending an appeal, has not attended a UNC public meeting since.
Dookeran lost out on the Opposition Leader’s post after the majority of UNC MPs threw their support behind Persad-Bissessar.
He has since taken up a seat on the back benches of Parliament.
The meeting will be chaired by Rabindra Moonan and Dr Anirudh Mahabir — two UNC activists who, despite a convincing challenge, lost the last local government election for the party’s control of the San Fernando City Corporation.
Senator Sadiq Baksh will also speak at the meeting. The meeting will also see newcomers attorneys Kevin Rattiram and Judy Kubalsingh making their debut on the political scene.
