BHP clean on mock drill
where several stakeholders were on hand to witness the event. The drill took place at the mouth of Lizard River and involved 25 field responders and ten persons in the Command Centre. The primary aims of the exercise were to test BHP’s incident management team (IMT) during a simulated oil spill incident, ensure the effectiveness of the field response team in the deployment of materials and equipment and ensure compliance with international ship and port security code certification requirements.
The drill which simulated a spill in Guayaguayare Bay proved to be a learning experience for all participants, both on and off the site, including members of the community, who had the opportunity to put their previous oil spill response training to use. These area residents had earlier this year been trained as field responders and so were already equipped with knowledge on basic spill response, shoreline response, deployment techniques and decontamination procedures.
