PLANS to cremate lovers Anil Mahabir and Elizabeth Mary Khemraj, who were both killed on the Solomon Hochoy Highway on Sunday, fell through because of a mix-up over police permission for their cremation.

Mahabir’s relatives said an error at the funeral home led the police to grant permission for his burial and not cremation.

This had to be corrected but by that time, Khemraj’s family got the go-ahead for her cremation which took place yesterday at the Mosquito Creek site.

Mahabir is to be cremated there this morning after a funeral service at his Macaulay Village, Claxton Bay home. Although Khemraj also lived in the village, their homes were separated by the highway. She lived on the west side and he on the east. And that was why they met their deaths on Sunday.

Mahabir, 26, was taking Khemraj, 20, home at around 8 pm when she was struck by a car as they crossed the highway. As he rushed to her Mahabir was knocked down by another car. One driver who did not stop was intercepted by police in Barataria.

Yesterday, Mahabir’s relatives united with Khemraj’s family for her cremation yesterday. Both families, a relative said, have been giving each other moral support.

“But, it is very sad and disappointing that both of them could not have been cremated today (yesterday),” the relative said.
