TT soldiers calm ex-Nazi town
Nuremberg was the main site of political rallies held in the 1930s by Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Party of which some architercture still exists.
But yesterday French news agency AFP singled out for praise the Trinidad and Tobago fans in a story “Nuremberg police confident for England match.”
The report said visitors were warned that Nazi salutes and symbols are illegal in modern Germany, for which two persons were recently deported according to other reports. European authorities are keen to relegate football hooliganism to the past and are keeping away neo-Nazi groups from the World Cup.
The AFP story said, “Trinidadian fans helped to create a relaxed atmosphere, even joining in an impromptu game of cricket, the sport for which the Caribbean nation is better known.”
Among those bringing calm to the streets of Nuremberg was a pan-around-the-neck group of soldiers from the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force.
The TT cultural contingent at the World Cup also included calypsonian De Fosto, soca artiste Shurwayne Winchester, and chutney star Rikki Jai.
The report said England’s once-notorious fans were enjoying the festive mood of the games.
