AFNA champs ‘Calypso Girls’ n-ballers feted

The “Calypso Girls” netballers, led by Simone Bowen-Sandy, won the Americas Federation of Netball Associations (AFNA) Championship title and a place in the world series, playing unbeaten in their seven round-robin qualifying matches two weeks ago in Barbados.

Boynes said, “we intend to go out there and do our best.”

The Minister commended the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago (SPORTT) for their financial input as well as their focus on netball, adding that the support will extend to the national Under-16 and Under-19 teams.

Boynes also issued a plea to the corporate sector to assist in the funding of sports, including netball.

During the luncheon, presentations were also made to Sandy, Ayanna Hamlet, who was voted as the Most Improved Player at the AFNA competition, and Lystra Zamore, who was named as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Coach Grace Parkinson-Griffith said her team’s success was due to commitment and determination.

The “Calypso Girls” netballers were led by the accuracy in shooting by goal-attack Zamore and ace goal-shoot Janelle Barker, while Crystal George and Anika LaRoche were outstanding in defence.

Trinidad and Tobago will now turn their attention towards the hosting of the Caribbean Under-19.
