Man Of Class seeks record 26th win

The grand old man from the cagey Maniram “Boboy” Maharaj barn will attempt to surpass Chanticleer’s 25 wins on the track when he lines up for the Starter Allowance feature on Saturday.

A son of Bandsman/Touch Of Class and now a 10-year-old, Man Of Class stands level with the ex-champion racehorse and will have six rivals in the 1200 metres race.

Judging from his form on the gallops, the gelding seems razor-sharp as he revealed yesterday morning when skipping over 8900 metres in the good time of 50.87 seconds.

Another from the Maharaj stable to catch the eye was St James Stakes winner Joint Effort seemingly gradually coming back to his best.

The Jamaica-bred three-year-old had King Of The Road and All For You Babes for company in a 600 metres gallop timed in a very good 36.06 seconds.

And Hurricane Lee one of 12 starters in the now very popular Hi 5 race over 1750 metres, looked very lively in a 600 metres spin clocked in 39.38 seconds. The eight-year-old grey horse Super Grey looked rather sprightly in his workout over 800 metres in a very good 51.17 seconds, and he too must be in the reckoning in the Hi 5.

There will be eight races on Saturday with champion jockey Brian Harding back in the saddle here after steering Alsafra to victory in the Jamaica St Leger to become the first filly in several years to clinch the Triple Crown.
