3 die in crashes

In one incident, cousins Anil Ramroop, 26, accounts payroll clerk of Brianna Avenue, Monroe Road, Cunupia and Anand Lalla, 28, a machine operator of Bhaggan Trace, Chandernagore, Chaguanas were returning to their respective homes yesterday morning after liming when tragedy struck.

Police said the young men were killed instantly when a Subaru car driven by Ramroop, crashed into a gravel heap before slamming into a light pole.

Police reported that at about 3.20 am, Ramroop was driving his vehicle near the Tarouba overpass, north along the Solomon Hochoy Highway in San Fernando when he swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle.

Ramroop was thrown out of the vehicle on impact and landed in a ditch while his cousin remained trapped inside the wreck.

Lalla’s sister Vidya, told Newsday she was the one who ironed her brother’s shirt for him to go out and lime.

“He left home just after 7 pm and my car was blocking his in the garage and I moved it for him to drive out. He never returned home,” Vidya cried.

Three years ago, Ramroop got married and last April moved out of his parents’ home at Bhaggan Trace and into his new home. The couple were expecting their first child next year.

Anila Ramroop said her brother and cousin Anand, were very close growing up and hardly ever did anything without each other. “They were very close to each other,” she said.

Twenty minutes before the double fatality, a Morvant teen was killed and several others seriously injured in a three-car smash up along the north-bound lane of the Solomon Hochoy Highway in Couva.

The victim Jamal Sudi De Souza, 18, of Pelican Extension Drive, Morvant, was a passenger in a car driven by Kern Lambkin, when the accident took place. Lambkin along with Mikael Martin of Belmont Valley Road, Belmont; Roebic Joseph also of Belmont, Mano Maharaj and Valene Garcia of Tabaquite were all seriously injured.

According to police, Lambkin was driving along the highway when on nearing the Preysal Flyover, his car collided with a car driven by Maharaj.

Police said Lambkin’s car overturned and crashed into a Hyundai Accent car. De Souza, police reported, died on impact.

The other injured persons were taken to hospital for treatment.

Freeport police are investigating.
