Local artistes team up with Guyanese act for Caribana

These artistes will be backed by Terry’s orchestra “Supertones”. Titled, “Chutney in De Park” this event will see the Caribbean artistes doing top chutney and soca tunes.

According to Terry, the Supertones band is now a well-established and recognised Indian Orchestra in Canada and the USA.

“We are now booked for shows throughout the year in many states in the USA and in Canada,” Terry said, adding that with the addition of the chutney artistes of Trinidad and Tobago they have been able to produce top class entertainment for overseas fans.

Supertones was nominated for “Overall Soca Chutney Band of the Year” for three years. The music group has toured extensively during 2008/2009.

Their repertoire includes soca, chutney, pop, rock reggae and R&B. TT’s top artistes have been working with this band for their stints in these countries.

The band has provided music for such artistes as soca queen FayAnn Lyons, Neeshan Prbhu, Rikki Jai, Adrian Dutchin, Anand Yankarran, Ramrajie Prabhoo, Sugar Cake Girls, Double D, Sonny Man (deceased), Rasika Dindial, Apache Waria, Arawak Indian, and DJ Prakz,

Terry, who is known in TT as Guyanese Baboo, hails from Berbice.

He started singing as a little boy in the Fyrish Road Mandir where his Aja (grandfather) was the Pandit. He learnt to play the dholak, dhantal, harmonium, keyboard and guitar.

Terry remains one of Guyana’s most charismatic and distinguished singers. Since his first record “Soca Lambada” was released in 1989, he has gone on to release over 25 more albums and has had number one records on all the Chutney charts in the Caribbean, North America and Europe.

This brilliant performer has represented Guyana at all major carnivals in the world including Labor Day in NY, Caribana in Canada, Miami Carnival, Nottinghill in London and Trinidad and Tobago at Spektakula Forum.

The versatile Terry does rhythms such as Bhagans, Filmi, Chutney, Soca, Calypso, Reggae and Ballads.

Salick and Hunter have both been travelling extensively having cop top spots at this years’s Chutney Soca Monarch. Salick’s mega hit “Radica” is very much in demand in New York, Canada, Holland and many other countries.

The winning tune has brought huge financial gain for Salick who previously worked as a grass cutter and yard man.

Today he has dropped his wacker and is moving with style as he is called to perform on a nightly basis here and abroad.

He shared the stage with India’s singer Zubeen who attempted to do “Radica” before a live audience in TT for Valentine’s Day.

“I have been singing for so long. It was years of disappointments until I scored with ‘Radica’,” he said. Noting that this is not a one hit wonder as he has several tunes soon to hit the local market.

Radica was based on a real life experience where his wife left him while his kids were quite young.

He has two more tunes based on his real life encounter with other women.

Hunter on the other hand has been producing several hit songs in recent years.

He received multiple awards for his 2008 hit “Bring It,” at the 2009 National Chutney Awards at Gaston Court, Chaguanas recently.

He won for “Most Exported Chutney Song,” “Most Internationally performed Chutney Artiste” and the coveted “Song of the Year” title.

His 2009 song, “Jep Sting Naina” earned him third position at the Chutney Soca Monarch and further overseas tours.

“I am having the time of my life with both songs,” he said.

This song was adapted from the Bollywood song “Jab Se Tere Naina.”

He has plans to release his new chutney in the coming weeks.

Rakesh also received multiple awards, at the National Chutney Awards.

They include: “Most Locally Performed Chutney Artiste”, “Most Played Chutney Song”, and “Best Classical Chutney”.

Rakesh has gained tremendous popularity from a young age.

He was the son of the great classical singer Isaac Yankaran (deceased).

Both himself and his brother Anand Yankaran did not have to try hard to gain popularity as their voices were similar to that of their father. Rakesh, who is a self-taught musician, has a good command on the Hindi language.

As a child young Rakesh loved to listen to his father sing Chutney. Today he is a professional Chutney artiste.

He can play Indian instruments such as the dholak, harmonium, the dhantal, and the Tassa drum.

He is famous for his songs “Mousie”, “Dheere Dheere”, “Dulahin Chale Sasural” and the most famous one of all “Narro Ray”.
