Trini students shine in CAPE and CSEC

The awardees will be presented with their prizes at a ceremony to be held in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) on December 3. Students from Lakshmi Girls’ Hindu School and Presentation Colleges in San Fernando and Chaguanas will receive awards for Business Studies, Environmental Science and Mathematics.

Shivana Sharma of Lakshmi Girls’ Hindu School won the Business Studies award after obtaining a Grade I mark in eight subjects which included six business subjects.

Kiron Neale , a student of Presentation College in San Fernando will receive an award for Environmental Science after he got a Grade I mark in five subjects and Grade II in three subjects.

Stuart Deoraj of Presentation College, Chaguanas will receive the award for the Most Outstanding Performance in Mathematics in the Caribbean Region. He received Grade I mark in ten subjects with all Grade As in the Modules. The 2009 Open scholarship and President’s medal winner Chantal Cave of St Joseph’s Convent, is the winner of the Natural Science award. Christo Cave, Shantal’s father said the family continues to celebrate her achievements, but stressed that without God, Chantal could not have succeeded.

Cave said they have already received an invitation from CXC, and Shantal’s mother will accompany her to the BVI for the ceremony.

Holy Name Convent, Port-of-Spain, student Jovelle Lewis won the award for Most Outstanding Performance in Humanities in this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exams. Lewis achieved a Grade I mark in nine subjects including five Humanities subjects.

Speaking about her achievements yesterday, 17-year-old Lewis gushed: “I was really, really shocked at learning I had won.

“My school’s principal Wendy Aqui gave me the good news. I am so excited!”

Lewis praised her parents Joan and Vel Lewis, two younger brothers and her school teachers for encouraging her to study as hard as she did.

Lewis said she would like to continue her studies in Canada and would love to work for the United Nations as a social worker.
