Beauty queens help needy

The young ladies and members of the Jericho Project began their day by distributing lunches to the needy at Columbus Square in Port-of-Spain, after which they proceeded to the Queen’s Park Savannah where they engaged in a friendly cricket match with the big prize being...one dozen rotis.

Ambassador for the Jericho Project, boxer Ria Ramnarine, who has been with the organisation for just six weeks, said there was a cause to assist any individual, institution or home in any way.

“The Miss TT World finalists are assisting us with the daily soup distribution in the south-central Port-of Spain branch that gives food to the needy.

“We thought it would be a good way of bringing awareness to them and us, the Jericho Project, because it has been doing so much. If we can get more people to notice us then we can get more sponsors,” Ramnarine said after playing a game of cricket.

Minister in the Ministry of the People and MP for Lopinot/Bon Air West, Dr Lincoln Douglas, was also on hand to lend his support.

Douglas said he just wanted to share and participate with the group in their sharing with the less fortunate in society. The minister also felt that there was a greater calm in the country during this Christian celebration.

“Good Friday and Easter serves to remind us to get rid of the negativity and egos and look toward a resurrection. Coming from a Christian background that is what I presented to my children this morning,” Douglas said.

Chairman of the Jericho Project, Phillip Edward Alexander, said everything they did required volunteers, donations and help from the public.

“We try to do it in as a big a public way as possible. On May 1, the acting president is going to be throwing out the first ball for the actual launch of our Jericho Project/Francis Shoe Locker Amateur Cricket League.

“We’re in our second year and everyone here is like family,” Alexander pointed out to several members who were enjoying the cricket match, including puppy Snoopy, who received his share of hugs from everyone.

“Right now we’re being decimated by the girls,” Alexander confessed.

Miss Santa Flora Neesa Mohammed said the eight delegates decided to gather under one unity banner with the Jericho Project because of one common goal.

“We all have something in common and that is to be charitable and assist the need...and have good, clean fun,” Mohammed said.
