TT advance at Davis Cup
The wins propelled TT into the Americas Zone Group III for next year’s Davis Cup.
Top local seed, Williams defeated Panama’s Carlos Silva easily 6-3, 6-2.
Wilson played well and comfortably dispatched Juan-Jose Fuentes. Wilson won the first set 6-4 and then sealed the match, winning the second set 6-2. This crucial victory cemented Trinidad and Tobago atop Group IV of the Americas and sealed a place in Group III next year.
However, the combination of Wilson and Williams went down in their doubles match-up against Panama’s John Silva and Silva (C). In the opening set, Wilson and Williams put up a strong fight, but went down to the Silvas 6-4. The local duo fought back in the second set and clinched a narrow 7-6 (5) win. They failed to build on the momentum of their second set win and went down in the third and deciding set 7-5.
This loss did not affect Trinidad and Tobago’s chances of advancing to the next stage since they won two of three games in their opening encounter against the US Virgin Islands last Thursday.
The Trinidad and Tobago team comprises of Wilson, Williams and Liam Gomez.
