Joint trade unions pray today

According to Michael Annisette, president of the Seamen and Waterfront Workers Trade Union (SWWTU), the service will be held at the Trinity Cathedral on Abercromby Street, Port-of-Spain and is intended to commemorate the launch of JTUM mass protest action across the country as part of its campaign against the five percent cap.

When contacted on the interfaith service, Annisette said, “There are a series of activities planned which will culminate with a mass demonstration on January 27 in Sangre Grande.”

The first “activity” planned by the JTUM is expected to begin on January 14.

A release issued last Friday on behalf of JTUM, stated, the interfaith service was the unions way of “seeking continued divine guidance and intervention in the struggle in defence of the rights and interests of the working class.”

JTUM is objecting to ongoing negotiations which they claimed were being hindered by a five percent wage cap placed by the Government. Thus far all State agencies have offered five percent increases for ongoing salary/wage negotiations which JTUM has campaigned against.
