Bonding as family with animals
Even though I can identify with certain aspects of this school of thought, I find it nearly impossible to see how some do not accredit the blatant benefits to these animals, who can enjoy an abundant and consistent supply of food, a safe and permanent home as opposed to their counterparts in the wild that face habitat destruction and poaching, readily available medical attention, and an endless source of love and attention, certainly only naming a few.
As a result of my short time spent at the Emperor Valley Zoo thus far, as a volunteer, any trace of uncertainty has been removed from my psyche, and I now no longer simply see a menagerie of animals. I see animals that are loved and cared for unconditionally by persons of all affiliations to the zoo. I see a collection of people who form the bonds of a family with these animals. I see no differentiation in love toward them regardless of differentiation in employment positions. I see people that are eager to gear their passion toward the public, not only to educate but also to engage people into a more active consciousness toward animal welfare.
I see animals that have been given a new lease on life, free from the real enslavement they once faced at the hands of people who used them for personal fulfillment. I see the efforts that are being undertaken behind the scenes to promote and preserve our locally endangered wildlife. I see an organisation that functions on the principles of passion and determination, by nothing short of incredible people. I truly am honoured to have a small space on the team.
