US$5,000 grant for ALTA

Hyatt Community Grants, a key component of Hyatt Thrive – Hyatt’s global corporate responsibility platform – encourages hotels around the world to identify and nominate local nonprofits for funding consideration through Hyatt Hotels Foundation. The programme builds on Hyatt’s belief that no one better understands a community’s most pressing issues – and their solutions – that those that live and work there.

“Since 2009, we have been teaming up with United Way Trinidad and Tobago in funding or manpower to support their tremendous impact in the community,” said Russell George, general manager of Hyatt Regency Trinidad. “With input from United Way, ALTA was nominated by Hyatt Regency Trinidad to be considered as candidate for the Hyatt Community Grant. We are fortunate that Hyatt Thrive gives us the means to identify and support their work, and we hope the community will help secure additional funding for ALTA in the Facebook campaign, which runs through the end of the year.”

New this year, the community can help further extend Hyatt’s financial support of ALTA. Now through December 31, visit the Vote. Give.Thrive. application on Hyatt’s Facebook page to vote daily on which of the 26 Hyatt Community Grant recipients will receive additional funding from Hyatt. The nonprofit with the most votes will receive an additional US$10,000, and the second and third place organisations will each receive an additional US$5,000. Visit Facebook.com/Hyatt for more details and to vote for ALTA.

“This grant will directly sponsor ALTA classes, and will have a great impact not only on the lives of the adults who attend these classes, but on their families and society as a whole. We are thankful that Hyatt Regency Trinidad and United Way nominated our organisation to be the recipient of this generous donation,” said Paula Lucie-Smith, founder and CEO, ALTA, “It would be great if we could get the additional funding through the Facebook vote.”

For those who wish to assist with teaching the classes, ALTA is currently interviewing interested tutor volunteers until Carnival 2013.

The Adult Literacy Tutors Association, a non-profit organisation in existence since 1992, provides the only comprehensive, structured, adult literacy programme in Trinidad and Tobago. ALTA conducts free classes at 60 locations throughout Trinidad taught by 300 volunteer tutors.

Every year, ALTA trains 100 new volunteers and a one-day refresher course is mandatory for all continuing volunteers. ALTA produces all its own teaching materials.
