Ticks and fleas

Fleas thrive in dry season dust and ticks are rife now that the wet season has started.

It is important that owners check their pets carefully and treat them before the ticks and fleas take over. In the case of ticks, it is also important to take your dog to the vet promptly if it shows any sign of illness, as it may have contracted tick-fever. This requires urgent treatment.

There are several good products available for the treatment of ticks and fleas. These can be bought in agricultural shops. Cipertick and Ectoban need to be diluted by mixing 1 tsp (5ml) in a 2 litre bottle of water. The mixture is poured onto the dog and rubbed into the fur. The fleas and ticks should be seen dropping off the animal shortly afterwards. Be careful not to make the mixture too strong as it can have an adverse effect on an animal. If you prefer, a spray or a liquid concentrate to rub in, then try Frontline for your pet.

You can also search the internet for “natural” products that may help.

Spray your yard at the same time as you treat your pet, especially the area where the animal sleeps. Be sure to treat its bedding, too. If yours is an old house, raised a little above the ground, spray under it to kill off fleas that can enter the house via cracks between the floorboards.

Read the instructions on the product labels and make sure you repeat the treatment as often as needed. You may save your pet’s life. Follow us on Facebook.
