TT dethrone Jamaica as U-17 cricket champs

The hosts defeated Guyana by four wickets at Louis D’or Ground in the sister isle Tobago yesterday to finish atop the six-team standings with 24.8 points, while early pace-setters Barbados were second with 19.9 points.

The Windward Islands ended in third spot with 19.5 points, followed by the Leeward Islands (13.8), Jamaica (12.8) and Guyana (6.7). At the Louis D’or Ground, Guyana were dismissed for 242 runs in 48.5 overs with Shimron Hetmeyer hitting 105, Ronaldo Reece 46, Kemo Paul 21 and Ryan Adams 20.

Bryan Boodram was the leading TT bowler with three wickets for 36 runs, while Carl Vialva took 2/29 and Varindra Jagrup 2/60.

Trinidad and Tobago were in trouble at 138/6 before Man of the Match Jeron Maniram (94) and Brandon Jaggernauth (45) produced an unbeaten 109 runs to earn victory for the hosts.

Maniram’s knock, off 86 deliveries, featured ten fours and four sixes while Jaggernauth’s innings came off 37 balls with three fours and three sixes.

Amir Jangoo earlier contributed 48 while, for Guyana, Parmesh Parsotam collected 2/30.

Barbados failed in their bid to capture the title when they were spanked by 35 runs by the Leewards at Bon Accord.

The Leewards were bowled out for 222 in their allotted 50 overs with Man of the Match Ross Powell notching 107, off 143 balls, with six fours. Philo Wallace chipped in with 23 and Tyrone Williams 22.

For Barbados, Tremaine Holder got 3/36, Ian Boyce 2/36 and Deswin Currency 2/46.

Despite a top-score of 54 from tailender Domique Drakes, 37 from Kyle Hinkson and 25 from Shemar Springer, the Bajans were bowled out for 187 with 2.3 overs remaining. Alzarri Joseph was the chief destroyer for the Leewards with figures of 3/55 while Jaidel Richardson had 2/18 and Kenrick Scott 2/36.

The day’s other game saw the Windwards whip Jamaica by 24 runs at Mt Pleasant. The Windwards were restricted to 203 in 49.5 overs, with a knock of 63 from Man of the Match Gidron Pope, as well as 27 from Daryl Cyrus and 26 from Kyle Cabey. Ryan Burnett got 2/31 for Jamaica, while Abhijam Mansingh took 2/34 and Lenardo Salman 2/40.

In response, Jamaica were dismissed for 179 in 49 overs, as Kershaski JnoLewis got 4/31 and Cabey 2/30 for the winners.

The Jamaica batting revolved around Shahid Crooks’ 39, Mansingh’s 36, Michael Frew’s 32 and Saad Ahmed’s 31.
