The deceased, Jahwi Ghany, 31, was a mechanic who lived with his wife and two children in Freeport, Chaguanas.
Official police reports state at about 2 pm yesterday, members of the Central Division Task Force were on mobile patrol along Main Road Bank Village, Carapichaima when they had cause to stop and search Ghany, and a quantity of plant like material was found in his possession
He was arrested and taken to the Chaguanas Police Station to be charged for the offence and was placed in a cell at the station.
Ghany then complained of chest pains and a request for the Emergency Health Services assistance was made. As they awaited the arrival of the health services, his condition worsened. Ghany was conveyed to the Chaguanas Health Facility in a marked police vehicle driven by PC Seecharan in company with WPC Cuffie , however, he was pronounced dead on arrival by Dr Ramdhanie. The body was conveyed by attendants from Belgroves Funeral Agency to the San Fernando mortuary for transfer to the Forensic Science Centre, St James, for an autopsy which is expected to be conducted today. Relatives who had gone to the Forensic Science Centre told reporters the circumstances that surround Ghany’s death have them perplexed, and they are waiting on the autopsy report to shed light on what happened. Relatives said Ghany, who was expecting his third child soon, was an upstanding person who had never been arrested before.
“This would be the first time he ever got locked up. The police told us he was normal and talking and everything and all of a sudden he started to vomit. They rushed him to the hospital and he died. We are waiting on the autopsy report to see what really happened. He just turned 31 this Saturday, and he has a seven-year-old, a one-and-a-half-year-old and one that’s going to drop (born) either today or tomorrow,” Ghany’s brother Latiff Shah told Newsday. “The man now finish fixing a car and he went out to get a seal, and he buy his little smoke, police pick him up around two o’clock. we can’t find him until four o’clock and police telling us he is dead,” Shah said. Investigations are continuing.
