Speaker, AG scandals troubling

There have been calls for the resignations of Speaker of the House of Representatives Wade Mark and Attorney General Anand Ramlogan.

Mark found himself in hot water after he admitted that Finance Minister Larry Howai and not the Judiciary had informed him of a lawsuit which he restricted Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner from referring to in his no confidence motion against Howai, in the Lower House last Friday.

And, the AG has been called on to resign over allegations of witness tampering.

Hadeed said the Speaker presided over the arm of the Legislature, while the AG was not only titular head of the Bar, but also guardian of the public interest.

“It is untenable that these men...can be allowed to remain in office without further bringing their organisations into further disrepute,” Hadeed said in a statement yesterday.

Hadeed said both institutions were guaranteed under the Constitution as critical to the functioning of the country’s democracy, and required mature and enlightened leadership which must earn the trust of the population.
