Children’s Authority condemns assault

THE Children’s Authority yesterday publicly condemned the action of a man who was seen on video abusing a toddler and has advised parents and guardians to exercise vigilance in ensuring the safety of their children. There was a public outcry after a video was uploaded on several social media websites showing the assault on the child.

The video depicted a man sitting bareback in the living room of a house holding on to a toddler who was crying and shaking. The man was also holding a bottle with baby formula. The man could be seen on the video forcing the child to drink the milk. When the child refused, he slapped the child to the floor, then pulled her back up to her feet by her hair.

In a release sent yesterday, the Authority said as soon as it received news of the video, its Emergency Response Team was alerted to make contact with the child’s family. “While the Child Protection Unit of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service is investigating the incident, the Authority is working with the mother and the child to provide the necessary support which includes medical treatment and counselling,” the release stated.
