Point Fortin Anglican win 1st Mini Handball Festival
Five primary schools including Lower Morvant Primary, New Morvant Primary, Point Fortin Anglican, Hockett Baptiste Primary and St Joseph Girls RC took part in the oneday handball event.
The day’s activities consisted of a series of handball games where the different schools went headto- head against each other, all while being introduced to the sport of handball.
Point Fortin Anglican were crowned the winners at the end of the day.
General Secretary of the Trinidad and Tobago Team Handball Association and Academic Instructor at the University of Trinidad and Tobago, Rhonda Clarke, spoke about handball’s steady and continued growth: “The purpose for the Mini Handball Festival is to act as an awareness programme in Trinidad and Tobago, and we are targeting the age group between ages six to twelve, to try and get them exposed to the sport. Handball has been in existence in Trinidad for the past twelve years and as of 2015 in April we were able to form a national team. Twenty- four of our athletes from the National team are from UTT .
“We have Beach Handball on the outside where we play on a sand-court or on the beach and we have indoor handball where we play on an indoor court,” she said.
Clarke also spoke about the National handball team’s future engagements, which include preparation for a beach handball competition in July, a game against St Kitts and Nevis and an indoor handball competition in Cuba in August.
UTT and the TTT HA are looking to hold a grand handball event in Skinner Park, San Fernando in August.
Also as a long-term goal, the association would also like to organise a youth handball league, as well as introduce handball to the secondary schools and initiate a secondary school handball league.
