UNC MP: No inspiration for athletes
I n a release, Charles alleged, “Brand TT has taken a hit since September last.”
Noting the successes of Jamaica’s athletes at the Olympics, Charles said while Jamaica is not as financially blessed as TT, “their leaders, however, have inspired a belief that their country stands heads and shoulders above others, including us, and they are capable of impressive achievements.”
He said any athlete running in a lane next to a Jamaican is at great psychological disadvantage, and added, “By contrast Brand TT under (Prime Minister) Dr (Keith) Rowley does not inspire belief in ourselves.”
He said while TT’s athletes tried their hardest to win in Rio, “it would have helped if they came from a country led by a government which spoke to the vision that we were the best in the world, that despite our many challenges we had a bright future ahead, that we should put TT first, and that great things were expected of all citizens.”
Charles said as TT looks ahead to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, it was imperative that Rowley understands he is the Prime Minister “of all of TT.”
In congratulating Olympic bronze medallist Keshorn Walcott and other members of the TT Olympic team on Sunday, the Prime Minister said preparations for Tokyo 2020 have to start early and the Government “stands firmly behind all our athletes.”
Rowley said TT made history in Rio with its first performances in events such as gymnastics, boxing and rowing.
He added swimming, cycling and sailing give this country hope for medalling in future Olympic Games.
