Zika breeding sites still present in Maraval
A statement from the Ministry of Health yesterday indicated that Deyalsingh went back to Boissiere Village to see what progress had been made with the cleaning up of the area and was alarmed that nothing was done.
The ministry said Deyalsingh, having had discussions with Minister of Rural Development and Local Government, Franklin Khan, will redouble efforts to address the issue of source reduction of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito which is responsible for the spread of the Zika virus, yellow fever and dengue among other illnesses.
“These measures will include the enforcement of revised legislation and the imposition of higher penalties under the Yellow Fever Regulations of the Public Health Ordinance which was increased from $500 to $3500 in May 2016.” In the release, the ministry advised that the Zika virus is now a global threat to public health given its presence in approximately 70 countries.
