NCIC to pay tribute to Daaga
According to event co-ordinator Surujdeo Mangaroo, the council will do a special drumology to mark the tireless work of Daaga to promote African culture.
“We have come a long way as a people and we must pay tribute to these great men who once walked this land, who are sons of the soil.” Mangaroo said, adding that 50 percent of this event will showcase African dance and music.
Daaga who was also known as Geddes Granger died on August 8. The NCIC is honouring him for lobbying for the Emancipation Day holiday. The NCIC said it also remembers Daaga’s struggle in 1970 in Caroni where he pleaded with Africans and Indians to unite. In 2013, Daaga was awarded the nation’s highest honour the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (ORTT ).
Performances will be done by Trinidad Multicultural Dancers, Prema Shakti Dance Company, Nritya Sangam Dancers, Wasafoli Dancers, N9 Dance Company, Chinese Cultural Association, Xtreme Breakers, Nirvana Dance Company, Rico Suave Dance Associates, Khalnayak Dance Academy, Sky Academy African Dancers, Kimran Ramparas aka Crazylegs, Shooting Stars Tassa Group and Pannist Opal Murrell.
Sandra Sookdeo, Eugene Joseph, and Torrence Mohammed will also be honoured for their contributions.
Showtime is from 6.45 pm to 9.45 pm
