Mattress Buying Tips

Mattress comfort is subjective so to know the differences between soft, firm, coiled etc., you will have to understand what makes up the mattress core. The firmness is provided by the mattress core and there are 4 popular types of mattress cores:

The innerspring core creates a bounce which can vary depending on the gauge of the metal coils used in manufacturing. The smaller the gauge the less the bounce. The coil core is usually covered either by a fiber or foam layer which should be firm and well quilted for best results.

The foam core is made of polyurethane and provides very firm support. However, the quality of these mattresses is determined by the thickness of the layer of foam and the foam’s density. The thicker the foam the deeper you will sink. Whereas the higher pound per cubic foot of density, the better the quality.

Latex mattresses provide firm support but are a little springier. Natural latex mattresses are antimicrobial, resistant to mold and dust mites (not the synthetic version). The latex mattress comes in 2 densities, Dunlop the heavier and Talalay the lighter softer version.

Air filled vinyl or rubber chamber mattress have remote controlled firmness. Many allow separate inflation of the side by side chambers to control the firmness of either side of the bed.

Other factors that come into play when selecting a mattress are your habits and body type. This is offset by the amount of pressure relief of the mattress.

If you sleep on your side the mattress must offer pressure relief. This does several things. The material in the mattress moves in such a way that it supports the weight and adapts to the shape of the body. Comfortable memory foam or soft topper mattresses works best for side sleepers.

For stomach sleepers the firm top provides the best support. A dense innerspring, air filled or latex mattress will do the job.

People who sleep on their backs, a mattress designed with a combination of support and give, helps to protect the spine and keep it in alignment. Any of the 4 mattress types will work however, try out a variety of mattresses to find the most comfortable for you.

Protecting your investment is very important. Waterproof mattress protectors not only protects the mattress from stains, liquids and ripping but because you can remove them and wash them they can also prevent mold from forming inside the mattress.

Generally the mattress / bed should be 4 -6 inches longer than the tallest sleeper. Don’t forget to clean stains with dry suds, vacuum, rotate and flip your mattress every 3 months.
