Man reports underage daughter’s pregnancy

A MAN from West Trinidad has reported to police that he observed his 16-year-old daughter, who is a form five student at a secondary school appeared to be showing signs of being pregnant.

He said that he confronted his daughter who admitted having sexual intercourse with a 19-year-old man whom she declared was her boyfriend and whom she was deeply in love with.

Officers of the Children’s Authority were alerted and they took the teenager to a District Medical Officer on Saturday.

Medical tests confirmed that she was pregnant. The girl admitted freely to having a sexual relationship with the man and pleaded with police not to arrest him, saying they were in love and are planning their lives together.

However, an arrest warrant has been issued for the man who has gone into hiding.

According to law, a person below the age of 18 cannot legally give consent to engage in sexual intercourse.

The man is facing a charge of having unlawful sex with a minor.

Western Division police are continuing investigations.
