Special Olympics Seaside Games tomorrow

The Seaside Games is meant to be a demonstration of beach sports as an option to increase the sports offered to athletes with intellectual disabilities and an avenue to educate the members of the public about persons with intellectual disabilities. It is expected that over 175 athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers will be participating at the Games.

Yesterday SOTT held an Open Water Swim Coaching Workshop led by former SOTT athlete, Kester Edwards, who works with Special Olympics International.

The workshop was held at the Cascadia Hotel with several local coaches attending.

Kester was joined by SOTT Aquatics Head Coach, Stephen Telfer and Mike Nayarko in facilitating the workshop.

The Seaside Games is the latest instalment of SOTT ’s 2016 Community Sports Training Programme which is sponsored by the Digicel Foundation. Blue Waters, SOTT ’s official water provider, will also be there to ensure the athletes’ hydration while Caribbean Cross Training is providing Open Water race logistics.

Sunday’s activities: - Open Water Swim Competition (7:30 am – 9 am) Special Olympics athletes will combine with veteran swimmers from the Trinity Masters Swimming Club to compete in a Unified Team race. Each team will see a Special Olympics athlete paired with a veteran swimmer to complete the 750 metres course.

- Beach Volleyball Competition (9:30 am – 11:30 am) There will be Unified teams comprising of two Special Olympics athletes and two volleyball players competing on the day.

- Aquathlon (11:30 am – 12 noon) Special Olympics athletes will compete in this run-swim-run event where they will run 50 metre, swim 200 metres and run another 50 metres - Beach Football Competition (12 noon – 3:30 pm) Special Olympics athletes will compete in 5-a-side soccer among their peers. They will be joined by members of the Nation Beach Soccer Team which is currently preparing for World Cup Qualifiers in Unified exhibitions games to close the day’s activity.
