Man shot dead in Enterprise

Police have identified the victim as Jankie Persad of Enterprise Street, Enterprise in Chaguanas.

Residents reported to police that at about 8 pm on Saturday, there was a firework display to commemorate Divali - the Hindu festival of light over darkness and good over evil. At about 10 am yesterday, a resident went to check on Persad and discovered his bullet-riddled body on the ground.

Residents last saw Persad alive on Saturday evening when he returned home, having visited a sister who lives in the Enterprise community.

Residents, like police, believe that the some of the explosions heard during the celebrations were gunshots. Persad is the second man, from the same house, to be shot and killed within two days. Only on Thursday at about 7 pm, Enterprise residents heard gunshots and later found the bullet- riddled body Kieron “Panther” James, 24, on the floor of the same house. Police suspect that Persad may have been a witness to the murder of James.

Persad is also the second senior citizen to be killed within 24 hours.

On Friday at about 4.30 pm, 62-year-old Mohandas Ramasir, was at Tajudeen’s Bar along the Cipero Road, Retrench Village, San Fernando when gunmen shot him during a robbery.

Ramasir, of Balisier Avenue, Pleasantville, was rushed to the San Fernando General Hospital where he later died.

Autopsies are expected to be performed today on both bodies at the Forensic Sciences Centre, St James.
