Man shot outside church is in ICU

The man is at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital under police guard, sources told Newsday.

A police report stated that at about 9.30 am on Sunday, the man was standing in the roadway near the Calvary Temple at Theresa Street, Marabella.

There he fired several shots in an attempt to interrupt the christening ceremony of his stepchild. He has a child with the mother of the child whose christening ceremony was taking place.

Police said that at the time the man was intoxicated and began behaving in an unruly manner while brandishing the illegal weapon.

Several church members, including the Special Forces officer of the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment, called on the man to cease his violent behaviour, but to no avail.

The police report further stated that in the presence of church members, the man pointed his firearm in the direction of the solider who in turn drew his firearm and opened fire.

The man sustained a gunshot wound to the face and was rushed to the hospital where he remained up to last evening.

PCs Matloo and Mohammed together with other officers of the Marabella Police Station and Cpl Chance of the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment, visited the scene and conducted investigations.

Police noted that once discharged from the hospital, he will be charged with several offences including possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Once charged, he will face a San Fernando magistrate.
