4-H clubs ‘strategic asset for our future’

“For many years much lip service has been paid to the importance of the agriculture and fisheries sector and its far-reaching links to sustainable livelihoods, rural development, environment, health, diversified economy, and overall food and nutrition security for our country.

We must actively lobby for an avenue which gives voice to the voiceless in any national development agenda – our vulnerable, children and youths,” the release said.

Notwithstanding the challenges that continue to face local food production, farmers and fishers have supported the 4-H movement in the culture of agriculture, educational field trips, social spheres and interaction, performing arts, mentorship, advocacy, and building camaraderie as well as leadership roles in the National Fruit Festival and the annual Eat Local Day, the release said.

The 4-H name represents four personal development areas of focus: head, heart, hands, and health.

The goal of 4-H is to develop citizenship, leadership, responsibility and life skills of youth through experiential learning programmes and a positive youth development approach.

Although typically thought of as an agriculture- focused organisation, as a result of its history, 4-H today is much more dynamic.

The National 4-H Voluntary Leaders Council will host a walkathon on November 5 from 7.30 am in partnership with the St Patrick East County starting at the Dayanand Memorial Vedic School.
