IGT donates computers to Memisa Centre

Claxton is manager of the centre which is a vocational training centre offering services to people with intellectual disabilities. It has been in operation for 43 years.

IGT (formerly GTECH) donated four new touch-screen computers, eight tablets and one smart television to the computer room as part of the company’s signature philanthropic programme – the After School Advantage Programme.

“I would like to thank IGT for partnering with the Memisa Centre through the After School Advantage Programme for Internet- ready computers,” said Claxton in a media release. “The benefits of having information technology for the students are an inclusive, social and captivating way for the students to learn.” Claxton explained, “With the social aspect, the children feel like they are playing, so small group collaboration occurs naturally.

For the children who don’t normally mix, they would be curious about the computers and find learning accessible and fun regardless of their learning style.” A non-governmental organisation (NGO) located in the Heights of Guanapo, Arima, the Memisa Centre’s primary objective is to provide an environment where learning and caring takes place and to encourage the students to reach their full potential.

“The IGT team is delighted to partner with the Memisa Centre, an organisation that has for so many years provided dedicated care to people with special needs,” said Ann-Dawn Young Sang, IGT’s regional vice president for the Caribbean. “Much like the Memisa Centre, IGT believes that everyone should have the opportunity to realise their full potential regardless of mental or physical disability. Our hope is that this donation will help in providing the skills and confidence trainees need to excel as employees in a technology-driven job market.” There are three components to the Centre - A residential care unit, a Vocational/ job training and placement unit and a special education unit/ school. Trainees at the vocational/job training and placement unit will benefit from learning on new state-of-the-art equipment.

The school empowers the students to conquer their disabilities, and teaching at the centre is based on the intellectual ability of each student. Students are also instructed in life skills such as home economics, agriculture, craft and performing arts. The special training in garment construction, art and craft, aquaculture and grounds maintenance help prepare them for employment.

The computer lab will also be open for use to members of the community and the residents at the centre.
