She was speaking yesterday at the American Chamber of Commerce of Trinidad and Tobago 20th Annual Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE ) Conference and Exhibition held yesterday at the Hyatt Regency, Port-of-Spain.
The purpose of the Cybercrime Bill, 2015 is to provide for the creation of offences related to cyber crime and for other related matters in Trinidad and Tobago.
Maharaj in her presentation said that with this country in a global environment, electronic crimes can happen locally and they do. She added that the banking sector on a daily basis has to put systems in place to address financial or other crimes in a digital environment.
She also said in this increasingly connected global environment Trinidad and Tobago needs to keep apace and for this reason for the past decade the ICT legislative framework has been developed.
On the Data Protection Bill, which has been partially proclaimed, Maharaj said the Ministry of Public Affairs and Communications is currently putting things in place to ensure the implementation of the Information Commissioner and in the short term it is an “immediate priority”.
In an earlier presentation Miguel Sciancalepore, representative of Microsoft LATAM Markets, said that TT cannot be behind in this fourth industrial revolution and needs to have the proper regulatory environment.
