Lawrence, Edwards square off over ‘pensioner’ talk

The contest is expected to be competitive as both boxers have an impressive record. Lawrence from Siparia, who has had numerous bouts in Venezuela recently has a record of eight wins and one loss. Edwards of Cocorite does not have a defeat to his name with a record of eight wins and one draw.

Both boxers were beaming with confidence at a press conference held at the Sweet Lime Restaurant in Woodbrook yesterday. The taller, slimmer Lawrence stated, “this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me and I am going to grasp it with my both hands. My opponent here Nigel Edwards he is a bit stricken in age, he looks like a pensioner, how would I let a pensioner beat me? I feel good going into this fight. I have been going to the gym, working long hard hours. I believe I am where I supposed to be.” Edwards was quick to respond saying, “He (Lawrence) has to prove to me that he could beat me in the ring because all that talk about pensioner, pensioner (is nothing). There is a history of pensioners beating younger boxers. I don’t talk with my mouth, my hands will do the talking.” Patterson Hassan Matthews, the coach and manager of Edwards also threw some words at Lawrence. Matthews said, “I only hope that Siparia prepare the stretcher for our colleague (Lawrence) here.” Fight promoter Boxu Potts, who is also the manager and coach of Lawrence was grateful to Ma Pau for the support and is anticipating the bout. Potts said, “We want to thank Ma Pau Members Club once more for being the front runner in boxing.

On the 28th of this month in Siparia you will have the pride of Siparia go up against the pride of Port of Spain.

This is going to be a north-south thing, you will have Sheldon Lawrence representing his hometown of Siparia and you would have Nigel Edwards representing Port of Spain.” Ma Pau is giving $10,000 towards the fight card.

Potts said there will be at least five amateur bouts and three supporting bouts. Gates will open at 6 pm, while the main bout is expected to start at 8 pm
