BABY ORPHANED
Karelle Nicholson, 20, from Arouca, and Kevin Frederick, 24, from Arima, the parents of one-year-old Kailee-Anne Frederick, lost their lives, after their car spun out and flipped several times on the road.
According to police, at just before midday on Sunday, Nicholson with Frederick as a passenger, was driving a white Nissan Tiida, with the licence plate PDM 5271, along the highway.
As they reached near PriceSmart, the driver of the vehicle, Frederick, lost control of the car and it flipped at least four times before coming to a stop in a nearby drain. Both occupants were thrown from the car. Witnesses said they saw the vehicle travelling at a high speed then attempting to make a sudden stop when the car crashed.
“Like the man mashed the breaks, and, I don’t know if he tried to lock to the left, but the car flipped. Before the car stopped, I was running across the road to help. That was when I saw the man (Frederick) on the ground, “ one witness told Newsday.
Witnesses alerted police and emergency services, and officers from the Arima Police Station responded.
The couple died at the scene.
Police and emergency services cordoned off the area and diverted traffic to avoid a traffic pileup, while Crime Scene investigators processed the scene.
The bodies of both Nicholson and Frederick were removed to the Forensic Science Centre in St James where an autopsy will confirm the cause of their deaths.
Relatives told Newsday yesterday that Frederick was dropping Nicholson off at Piarco Airport, where she works for a private security firm. According to relatives, they had been a couple for about four years.
Some family members told Newsday that they had just returned from work when they found out about the incident.
Police investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident believe that the two were in an argument just before the vehicle crashed.
The number of road fatalities for the year now stand at 27.
