Pump attendant beaten

On Thursday, the video footage was made available to head of North Eastern Division Snr Supt Surendra Sagramsingh who mandated a team of CID officers to investigate.

The victim was interviewed by police at the Unipet gas station.

He confirmed the attack but said he did not lodge a report after being told his attackers are considered dangerous.

The pump attendant said he was at work on Tuesday night when a Hyundai Tucson SUV pulled up in the gas station and the driver went to pay for gas.

The attendant noticed a male passenger in the SUV smoking and told him this was extremely dangerous to do at a gas station. The passenger became enraged, alighted the vehicle and began to beat the attendant.

The driver of the SUV, who saw what was taking place intervened and also started to kick, cuff and slap the attendant who fell to the ground under the barrage of blows. Several persons watched as the man was beaten for close to two minutes before the onlooker called on the men to stop. The two got into the SUV which sped off. The pump attendant later sought medical attention.

Snr Supt Sagramsingh said a suspect has been identified and when investigations are completed, a warrant for his arrest will be issued.

A release from Unipet last evening expressed the company’s egret at the “unfortunate and unwarranted attack” on its customer service attendant at the El Socorro service station.

“This incident occurred when an employee advised a customer to extinguish his cigarette during the filling of his vehicle.

This is in keeping with public safety requirements in a service station and is done to protect the public’s interest,” the release stated.

Unipet said it looks forward to the speedy apprehension and conviction of persons who attacked its attendant.

“Unipet will continue to review and improve its security measures to ensure that all our employees and customers can feel safe and secure while using our service stations,” the release ended.
