Responding to a question in the House of Representatives, Rowley said the recent concerns about the domestic seabridge are public knowledge. He said it is also well-known that the cargo ferry service is not up to standard and has been causing, “some significant problems” in Tobago.

“In some instances people are facing some losses to their businesses,” Rowley said. He observed that if the situation deteriorates any further, “there might be some shortage of materials in Tobago.” Rowley added that unlike his predecessor Kamla Persad-Bissessar, he used Caribbean Airlines (CAL) to travel to Tobago.

Later in the sitting, Works Minister Rohan Sinanan gave the assurance that Government, “ will fix this problem, especially for the people of Tobago, once and for all.” On reports of financial losses being incurred by truckers, Sinanan stated, “the Port Authority has implemented a system where drivers would be issued courtesy tickets for travel.” Sinanan also disclosed that he met with the truckers and arranged for the Port Authority to meet with them tomorrow.

He reiterated there is a shortterm plan to procure a suitable vessel for the seabridge within one to three months.

Sinanan was confident this will be done. He reminded MPs the country was placed in the position when the Super Fast Galicia was, “withdrawn from service at short notice.” He said this is a matter currently engaging his ministry’s attorneys and those of the Port Authority.

Sinanan noted that the Ministry of the Attorney General and Legal Affairs is currently investigating allegations of “bid-rigging and collusion” in the Galicia’s first contract under the former People’s Partnership government.

Against this background, the minister said, “The Port Authority is very careful as to how it goes forward procuring another vessel.” Sinanan reiterated that in February, Cabinet gave the Authority permission to go out and tender for a vessel to replace the Galicia. He said Government has been proactive and responsible in addressing this matter.
